As someone who grew up on this show and is now raising my child with it as well, I felt the need to give a birthday shout out to Sesame Street. The very first episode of Sesame Street ran on November 10, 1969. I had to laugh this morning when Jarrod realized he was a month older than Sesame Street. The amazing thing is that after 40 years, Big Bird has only gone from age 4 to age 6, maybe we need to learn his secrets!
Everyone I know grew up on Sesame Street. I remember my brother having this large stuffed Cookie Monster doll and I had a plastic Big Bird chair (which my parents still have, and Bo has already gotten use out of when visiting Pop and Bebe). Not only do kids learn their letters, shapes, words, and numbers, but they also learn lessons on friendship, to do deal with the hard challenges of childhood like insults, being fair, and their feelings..."happy, sad, grouchy, and glad"! I also love how they learn about different ethnicities, languages, traditions, all walks of life...teaching kids how very similar we all really are.
Here's to 40 years of fun for all ages!! Happy Birthday Sesame Street!
